Welcome to Year 9

Having had the last two years to settle into secondary school, Year 9 can appear to be a daunting time for students. This is why we will help them to develop confidence, maturity and independence through teaching and pastoral care. It is crucial for Year 9 students to enhance their strengths, which will allow them to make the right option choices of examination subjects they enjoy, and in which they will excel, in readiness for Year 10 and 11.  Every student in Year 9 is seen as a young adult, capable of making the right decisions about their learning as well as their behaviour. It is also their opportunity to shine and act as mentors for the newest students at Tabor Academy.

We make no apologies for insisting on the highest standards of classwork, homework, presentation and behaviour at all times in Year 9. Every student must follow the school policy of ‘Be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.’ In return, we will ensure all Year 9 students have access to excellent learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom and their timetable. We also encourage as much support in the home as possible, and can provide guidance on how to help your child make progress.

Every student will continue to be supported by their Form Tutor who is the first point of contact, and has an overview of their learning and will be able to offer advice and guidance on a day to day basis.  Our Year Care Team Leader, Ms Culham, is responsible for student welfare and behaviour, and is available to help students and parents with any concerns they may have. As Achievement Team Leader, Mr. Chaplin is responsible for learning and achievement of the year group.  We are also supported by our SEN and EAL teams. A positive relationship between school and home is integral to the success of all students, hence it is important that parents and carers feel free to contact the school and speak to Ms Culham or Mr. Chaplin, or your child’s form tutor regarding any concerns. Both Ms Culham and Mr. Chaplin regularly visit lessons across all subjects to see learning as it happens.

At Tabor Academy we know it is important for students to have a quiet and distraction-free environment in which to complete their homework. It is set on a weekly basis, and should be completed punctually.  With this in mind, the school provides a homework support club in the library where there are various resources to enhance your child’s learning.

We look forward to a very successful year and are confident every member of Year 9 will be able to celebrate truly deserved progress and stunning achievements.
