Cross Country News

cross_country1As we approach the end of the cross country season, I am pleased to say cross country performances have become increasingly strong at Tabor. We are particularly proud of Connor Page and Freddie Martin who qualified to represent Essex in their respective age groups.

The first event on the calendar has become the prestigious Felsted Cross-country race to which we send Year 7, junior and intermediate teams. This event is attended by some of the strongest sporting schools in the area; our consistently high performances within the district have seen us become regular invitees to this prestigious event. Notable performances this year include:

  • Joseph Sutton Year 7 Boys 6th
  • Caitlin Betteridge Year 7 Girls 17th
  • Freddie Martin Junior Boys 6th
  • Alex Robertshaw Intermediate Boys 16th.

Every year as a school we organise and compete in the District Cross Country Tournament held at The Discovery Centre, Notley. The course is gruelling and tough and it is very rewarding to witness our students displaying determination and huge effort to complete the course. This year the Tabor cross country squad had some great results, eventually finishing 3rd out of 14 schools. Notable team performances were:

  • Junior and Intermediate boys who finished 2nd in their age group.
  • Year 7 and Intermediate Girls teams who both finished 4th.

Exceptional individual performance came from:

  • Joseph Sutton Year 7 Boys 8th
  • Caitlin Betteridge Year 7 Girls 3rd
  • Esme Scott Year 7 Girls 8th
  • Freddie Martin Junior Boys 3rd
  • Charlie O’Grady Junior Boys 5th
  • Connor Culham Intermediate Boys 8th
  • Daniel McLagan Intermediate Boys 11th

Huge thanks and congratulations must also go to Mrs French in the PE Department who single-handedly organise the whole event.

cross_country3The most impressive performance of the day came from Connor in Year 9 who became District Champion with an amazing run which saw him dominate throughout. This victory saw Connor qualify for the district team at the County Championships along with Freddie Martin in Year 8, Charlie O’Grady in Year 9 and Conor Culham in Year 11.

At the district event Connor finished a superb 4th place in very cold conditions. This meant that he became a member of the Essex Schools Cross Country Team. In his first competition for the Essex team, Connor competed in the South-East School Cross Country event in Reigate, involving County teams from across our region. In this race Connor finished a creditable 35th place out of almost 90 runners.

At the weekend, Connor again donned the Essex vest for the National Schools competition in Blackburn. After an overnight stay with the team, Connor again impressed, finishing a superb 34th out of over 300 runners. He was the second placed runner on the Essex team firmly establishing himself as a key member of the squad. With continued training and hard work it is clear Connor Page is a name to look out for in the future.

At the recent Year 7 and 8 County event Freddie Martin finished in a superb 16th place. With the first 16 runners in each age category being selected for the Essex County Team, this was an outstanding achievement. It was clear in the final stages that Freddie had the sole aim of making the team in his mind, pushing himself all the way to ensure that was the case. We wish him all the best at the Year 7/8 Southern Counties match to be held in Kent on Saturday 28th March.

Congratulations to all those who have competed in the team and huge thanks to all the PE staff who have supported and organised events. Mr Salmon, PE Department
