AS and A Level Art and Photography

For students with more definite ambitions towards exploring and developing a career path in the more creative industries, we offer both Art and Photography at AS and A Level within our Sixth Form. These courses have been designed to provide the very best of platforms from which Foundation or Degree level study can be confidently embarked upon.

For either discipline, students will be expected to work in a motivated, self-directed manner, at the same time making use of Tabor’s excellently equipped studio and dark room spaces. Tutors will support and facilitate at the start of each project, then direct and steer during each stage, ensuring the best possible responses and outcomes are attained by each member of the course.

Entry requirements are rigorous and prospective students will be expected to have a high level of creativity, organisational skills and personal resolve.

Students will develop their imagination and creativity, as well as analytical, experimental and documenting skills with this subject. They will discover a specialist vocabulary and develop their knowledge of the role of art, craft and design in the world’s history and in contemporary society.

Entry requirements:        B grade or above in Art or Photography at GCSE or aptitude that can be demonstrated by a portfolio.

Combine this course with:           Media Studies, History, Maths, English Literature

Essential to go on to:     Architecture, Advertising, Museum or Gallery work, Teaching.

Course Description

AS Level Art, Craft and Design                     OR                 AS Level Art and Design (Photography)

The course contains 1 unit: A Personal Creative Enquiry.

The unit is worth 100% of the final grade and consists of critical, practical and theoretical work. Students are required to work creatively within at least two of the disciplines stated by the examining board for the Art, Craft and Design option.

Visits to galleries and museums are an essential part of the course.

A Level Art, Craft and Design                     OR                  A Level Art and Design (Photography)

The course contains 2 units: A Personal Investigation;

Externally Set Assignment.

Unit 1 is worth 60% of the final grade and consists of an in-depth critical, practical and theoretical project, including an extended written element of 1000 words minimum. Students are required to work creatively within at least two of the disciplines stated by the examining board for the Art, Craft and Design option.

Unit 2 is worth 40% of the final grade, consisting of a preparatory study period developing responses to a given stimuli, and a final examination of 15 hours where a personal outcome is created.

Visits to galleries and museums are an essential part of the course.
