Welcome to Year 9

When our students reach Year 9 they are closer to GCSE examinations than they are to their primary school days.  This can be a daunting prospect but it is during this critical year that we see students taking on a more mature attitude as well as more responsibility for their own learning and their lives.  Along with this comes more independence and during the Spring Term of Year 9 we will be guiding our students through the GCSE options process to choose subjects they enjoy and at which they excel.  These subjects could lead on to areas of specialism, jobs and professions to which the students already aspire and can really help shape their lives and their future.

We actively encourage extended reading in Year 9, especially around the topics and subjects being studied in lessons. This has been proven to result in higher levels of achievement and an increased understanding of the wider world as well as an increase in vocabulary and communication skills and is a vital skill in preparing for the demands of GCSE examinations. Parental support and engagement with this is crucial to its success and we welcome any involvement in your child’s education in the home environment. As students in Year 9 approach young adulthood, it is important that students have an awareness of current affairs and world issues, whilst much of this is covered in PSHE sessions, keeping up to date with the news and every day events at home is beneficial.

Our Year 9 students are also supported in their everyday journey through Tabor by Ms Culham in the Year Care Team and their Form Tutors who they see every day. The Year Team is experienced and skilled in providing strong support for the diverse and evolving needs of the students and we work with parents to make sure that we get the very best from our students. In the year in which you turn fourteen the world can be a very confusing place and our Year 9 students need the support of all the adults in their world to make sure that they are fully prepared for the rest of their school journey and for a happy and successful life beyond Tabor.

“Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!” Anne Frank (14)
