Why study Leisure and Tourism?

The leisure and tourism industry is one the UK’s largest employers, offering a variety of exciting and rewarding career possibilities. Leisure and Tourism offers you the opportunity to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the industry, providing you with a first step onto the career ladder.

The course will enable you to gain skills in applying knowledge to real-world situations, including planning and carrying out investigations. Also to analyse and evaluate evidence and sources to make reasoned judgements and draw conclusions.

What will you study and how will you be assessed?

Understanding leisure and tourism destinations

  • Leisure and tourism destinations in the UK and abroad;
  • Visitor attractions and activities;
  • How people travel to destinations;
  • Impacts of tourism on communities and the environment, and how sustainability is important.

The nature of leisure and tourism
In this unit you will plan and carry out an investigation into an example of a leisure and tourism facility, the facilities in a chosen area or a tourism organisation. The investigation will also enable you to consider the range of employment opportunities available in the area or business.

The business of leisure and tourism
In this unit you will study named businesses to consider:

  • Marketing and promotion in leisure and tourism
  • Working in leisure and tourism business and the different
  • employment opportunities
  • Health and safety issues in the workplace.

Investigating tourism destinations and impacts
In this unit you will plan and carry out an investigation into a tourism destination, its attractions, and impacts of a recommended package or holiday including how the recommendation may be managed responsibly.

What are the trip opportunities?

Due to the nature of the Leisure and Tourism course it will be essential to undertake visits to leisure and tourism facilities within the Braintree and Colchester areas. There may also be trips further afield.
