Year 11 – Examinations 2016

Year 11 learners will be studying the Cambridge IGCSE English Language course.   With a three piece coursework folder and a speaking and listening element, students are able to focus on ensuring that they achieve the best possible grades.

Students also take a English Literature GCSE from AQA.  The Literature examination is made up of 40% coursework folder which is based on a Shakespeare play compared with poems within the Anthology cluster the pupils are studying.   There are two examinations for Literature and pupils will be assessed on their knowledge of ‘Of Mice and Men’, poetry and the AQA Short Stories Anthology.

Year 10 – Examinations 2017

New curriculum changes means that there is no longer the coursework element within English Language and Literature GCSEs from 2017 onwards.  Awards will be based purely on examinations.  Alongside this, grades as letters, are also redundant and in their place are numbers with a grade nine being equivalent to the top half of A*.  These changes have ensured new curriculum mapping to safeguard all the curriculum is covered.  The English Language course will be covering extensive non-fiction texts alongside reading and writing skills.  Spelling, punctuation and grammar are naturally part of the two Language examinations to take place in 2017.  The Literature course has significant changes.  Texts are no longer permitted to be taken into the examination.   Therefore, all poetry, Shakespeare and novels are to be covered extensively within school time with a focus on language, structure, context and comparison between texts.  Students will be exploring some of the following texts:

  • Charles Dickens ‘Christmas Carol’
  • Shakespeare ‘Macbeth’
  • AQA Poetry Anthology ‘Love and Relationships’
  • AQA Short Story Anthology
  • William Golding ‘Lord of the Flies’
  • JB Priestley ‘An Inspector Calls’
